Juneteenth. I have known about it since I lived in Austin in the late 70’s and early 80’s. I knew it as the celebration of when the slaves in Texas were told they were free, 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation and 2 months after the surrender at Appomattox. It is actually a much more complex story than that simplification.
Here is an article written about Juneteenth in 2015. It is a compelling read. Even though I grew up in Texas where we were all required to take Texas History in school, I did not know these details. I share this in honor of the long road it has been for their descendants. Let’s keep working for change and justice and understanding.
